Vanilla ambience is deliberately plain, and Effectual fills in the small visual details that make a world feel lived in. Your breath turns to steam in cold biomes and comes faster while you run, bubbles rise from your mouth for as long as your oxygen lasts underwater, and water drips off you for a moment after you climb back onto land.
The effects reach well beyond the player. Lamps, fires and campfires get reworked particles, including their soul variants, burning entities throw sparks, cave dust drifts through caves, and steam rises in columns wherever water touches a hot block such as lava or a lava-filled cauldron. Walking on snow leaves footprints and a little residue that follows you off the block, running on snow or sand kicks up its own particles, and placing sand, gravel or snow raises dust.
Smaller touches cover movement and combat: minecart wheels spark at high speed, striking metal blocks with iron, gold or netherite tools throws sparks, gliding with an Elytra leaves a faint trail, and the Wither effect wraps you in black smoke. Everything runs client-side, so no server install is needed, it sits happily next to most shader and render mods, and any individual effect you dislike can be turned off in the configuration file.
