Stellaris Dev Diary Details Great Mosaic Origin and Paragons

Stellaris empire management screen showing faction ethics and civic options

Paradox Interactive published Dev Diary #439 for Stellaris on November 5, 2026, continuing its look at the upcoming Ideologies content. This entry focuses on a new Origin, a self-improvement civic, and a set of powerful leaders tied to ethical extremes.

The Great Mosaic Origin rounds out the Willpower-themed Origins. It puts players in charge of an ethically diverse empire and hands them an extra civic slot right from the start. There’s no scripted story or event chain attached to it, similar to Prosperous Unification. The point is simply giving players more room to build their empire’s identity, though keeping a mixed-ethics population united will take some work. Paradox also confirmed that the Galactic Administration civic will allow empires to hold four civics at once.

Path of the Self and Spirit Cultivation

For Fanatic Spiritualist empires, the diary introduces Path of the Self, a civic built around repeated spiritual self-improvement. It triggers a recurring Spirit Cultivation Situation at the start of the game, where players pick a bonus, complete a cycle, and start again, with each round demanding more progress than the last.

Players choose between cultivating the Mind, which boosts Unity, Happiness and Stability, or the Body, which improves leaders. There’s also a darker option called Nerve Stapling, which can affect both. A Meditation planetary decision speeds up Mind or Body cultivation by dedicating colonies to the effort, though it doubles Amenity or Housing use for the Pops involved. Certain civics, like Death Cult, unlock their own unique cultivation paths, such as improving the effectiveness of sacrifices.

Ideological Paragons

Once an empire builds its Galactic Hall and adopts an Absolute Ethic, it can recruit an Ideological Paragon, a powerful leader tied to one specific ethical extreme. These leaders are loyal only as long as the empire avoids their opposing ethic. Adopting even a mild version of the opposite stance, such as regular Materialism, will drive off a Spiritualist Paragon. Each of the game’s ethics gets its own Paragon, built from variations of existing portraits.

Paradox said the next dev diary will cover the Inquisitor shipset, with a future entry expected to dig into the Ambition system afterward.

What this means for modders

None of this is live yet, so current Stellaris mods should keep working as normal for now. Once Ideologies content like Great Mosaic and the new civics ships, expect mods touching civics, origins, or ethics systems to need updates, especially anything that overhauls faction or ideology mechanics. Players running heavily modified saves may want to back up their setups before the update lands, since new mechanics like Spirit Cultivation could interact unpredictably with custom content.
