Better Foliage Renewed carries the look of the original foliage mod over to modern versions of Minecraft. Grass and leaves are drawn from richer models than the vanilla ones, so the world reads as far more organic, and not a single gameplay rule changes along the way. It is a client side mod, so it only affects what you see on your own machine.
The rewrite is what makes it maintainable. Where the original leaned on complex coremodding, an obscure programming language and textures generated at runtime, this version builds its visuals on resource pack APIs and ships with no dependencies at all. A welcome side effect is that mod compatibility is far simpler than before: support is already built in for Atmospheric, Bayou Blues, BOP, Caves and Cliffs and Quark, and anyone is free to add more.
Because the models arrive through a resource pack, most features do not have a config toggle. Instead you disable a specific model by overriding that block’s blockstate file with the vanilla one, which keeps the system open without a sprawling options menu. Particle effects are the exception and do come with settings. Performance sits close to vanilla, with leaves being the one place slower computers may feel a little strain, and shaders are where any difference becomes noticeable. This build is Forge only for Minecraft 1.16.5.
