Rats turns the humble rodent into both a pest and a workforce. Wild rats spawn at night in the Overworld of your Minecraft world, keep their distance from players, and quietly chew through wooden walls, raid chests for food and seeds and ruin crops. They squeeze through fences and open doors too, so an unguarded farm will not stay full for long. Rat Traps, building in stone and keeping a few cats are the classic answers.
The way out of an infestation is cheese. Pour milk into a cauldron and you get cheese, a decent food source and the key ingredient in most of the mod’s recipes. Corner a wild rat, drop cheese near it, and after ten to fifteen feedings it trusts you. The whole cheese-making process is configurable and can be swapped out for cheese from other mods.
A tamed rat opens its own inventory screen where you can hand it a helmet or banner, slot in upgrades and give it a job, and it can also ride on your head or shoulder. Rats gather dropped items, harvest mature crops, chop trees, breed animals, move goods between two marked inventories, patrol a set route and hunt whatever a mob filter points them at. A Crafting Upgrade on a Rat Crafting Table lets them auto-craft, and upgrades built from cheese and diamonds add health, speed, strength, armour and entirely new abilities.
Breeding runs through rat cages fitted with a Rat Breeding Lantern, and pups can turn up in colours neither parent had. Beyond the farm there are darker stories: diseased rats with red glowing eyes and mangy green fur that attack on sight, a rare illager known as the Pied Piper who commands rats with a flute in roofed forests, and Ratlantis, a hostile sunken land reached with an extremely rare token.
