A snowy taiga in vanilla Minecraft has a small but very noticeable gap: the ground under the trees stays bare while the open terrain around it turns white. Snow Under Trees fills in exactly those patches, so a cold forest reads as one continuous snowy surface instead of a clearing pattern around every trunk.
The snow is added in two situations. New chunks get it as they are generated, so freshly explored terrain looks right from the first moment you see it, and existing chunks get it while it is snowing, which means an older world catches up as the weather passes over it. Biomes that are not cold enough for snow stay untouched, so a normal forest keeps its plain forest floor.
Three config settings decide how far it goes. The placement in newly generated chunks and the placement during snowfall can each be turned off on their own, and a filtered biomes list lets you name biome IDs that the mod should not affect in any way; the ID of the biome you are standing in is shown on the F3 screen, so building that list takes seconds.
Support for other mods is broad. Modded biome sets such as Terralith, Oh The Biomes You’ll Go, Oh The Biomes We’ve Gone and Biomes O’ Plenty are covered, and the mod also supports Snow! Real Magic!, Serene Seasons, Eternal Winter, Dynamic Trees and Moonrise. It runs on Fabric and Quilt for Minecraft 1.21.1.
