Minecraft shows the name of the item you are holding above the hotbar and nothing else. Held Item Info fills in the rest, printing details that normally require opening an inventory and hovering a tooltip right underneath that name, so a quick swap to another slot is enough to check what an item actually carries.
The list of what it can display is long. Enchantments and potion effects are the obvious ones, but it also covers container contents, mainly Shulker Boxes and Bundles, firework flight duration, shape and colour, the commands stored inside a command block, how many bees are in a Bee Nest or Beehive, the projectiles loaded in a crossbow, item lore and the Unbreakable tag. Sign text, Music Disc and Disc Fragment titles, Goat Horn instruments, painting title, author and dimensions, Written Book author and generation, filled map identifiers, banner patterns on pattern items as well as on real banners and shields, and even the species of tropical fish inside a bucket each get their own line.
Every one of those entries can be switched off individually from the in-game settings when Mod Menu and a recent Cloth Config are present, so the display stays as detailed or as quiet as you want it. The mod is client-side and needs Fabric API; it runs on Fabric and Quilt for Minecraft 1.21.1 and weighs just 0.08 MB, which makes it an easy addition to almost any client-side setup.
