Spyglasses have never had much of a purpose in Minecraft beyond a little zoom. Field Guide changes that by turning the spyglass into a scanning tool: point it at a distant creature, plant or block and a scan that lands adds a fresh entry to a book that belongs to you alone. Curiosity finally pays off, and there is a real reason to travel out to rare biomes and track down the creatures that live in them.
Each entry can be annotated with notes of your own, so the guide ends up part encyclopedia and part expedition journal. Progress is stored separately for every server, which means a group can work through the same guide together over a long-running world, and almost every modded entity is recognised straight away with no configuration needed on your side.
For modpack authors the whole system is open. Categories and their contents are driven by datapacks and can hold any entity, block or even a multiblock structure such as a tree. Scanning can be allowed without a spyglass or locked behind defeating a monster first, discoveries can grant XP or fire off commands, and names, entries or entire categories can stay hidden until a player earns them.
