Diet adds a nutrition layer on top of Minecraft’s hunger bar. Alongside the usual hunger, the mod keeps a separate value for each food group – fruits, grains, vegetables, proteins and sugars in the default setup – and each of them sits somewhere between 0% and 100% depending on what you actually eat. Those values decay again as you burn through hunger, so a varied menu starts to matter more than one reliable stack of food.
The effects layer is what turns that bookkeeping into gameplay. Food group values can hand out rewards or apply penalties, and the pool is wide: any registered potion effect works, vanilla or modded, and attributes such as maximum health can be modified directly. Conditions are flexible enough to test specific values, look only at a subset of groups, or apply an effect once per matching test so the result scales with how well you eat.
Everything lives in server config files inside the world save, which means the groups, their icons, colours, ordering, gain and decay multipliers and the whole effect table can be rewritten without touching code – the mod is aimed at modpack developers as much as at players. Food from a long list of other mods is already sorted into the five default groups, so a heavily modded world keeps working from the moment it is added. Built for Minecraft 1.18.2 on Forge.
