Boids swaps the way schooling fish move in Minecraft for a proper boids simulation, the same class of model used to describe the coordinated movement of birds and fish in nature. Instead of drifting along in a loose clump, every fish constantly reacts to the neighbors nearest to it.
Three simple rules drive the whole shoal. Separation keeps a fish from crowding the flockmates right beside it, alignment turns it toward the average heading of the group, and cohesion pulls it back toward the center of mass of the school. Together they create the swirling, splitting and regrouping patterns you would expect from live fish.
The payoff is aquatic environments that feel far more alive, with schools that split, swirl and regroup as you swim past. The mod itself is tiny, runs on Fabric and targets Minecraft 1.21.1, so it fits into almost any setup without weighing it down.
