Mob Captains is a data pack that quietly upgrades ordinary spawns into something worth fighting. Captains turn up in common, uncommon, rare and legendary grades, and the gear they drop is enchanted in ways the vanilla game will never roll for you, which gives ordinary caving and night-time survival a reason to keep going.
Almost nothing about the pack is fixed. Every setting lives on a scoreboard and can be reached from a chat-based configuration menu by running the /function ps-mob:config command with operator permissions. From there you can raise or lower the spawn chance, change the cooldown after a successful spawn, decide which rarities are announced in chat and whether a sound plays with them, keep captains from despawning for longer, switch on a glowing outline that shows them through blocks, and turn the particle beam that marks a fresh spawn on or off.
The default rarity weights of 55, 30, 9 and 1 keep legendary captains a genuine event rather than a nightly occurrence, and a block on further spawns within 24 blocks of a fresh captain stops them clustering in one place. Loot is defined in editable data files, so both the drop weights and the items themselves can be rewritten to suit your world or server. The pack works on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt for Minecraft 1.21.1.
