Umbrellas adds a stylish way to stay out of the weather in Minecraft. Holding one blocks sky and rain related effects, so things like zombies burning in the daylight stop applying while the umbrella is up. Shielding uses durability by default, but that cost can be switched off in the config if you would rather keep an umbrella forever.
The starting point for the mod was keeping hydrophobic and heliophobic players comfortable when using the Origins mod, yet Origins is not a required dependency. The umbrella is written to block sky and rain checks coming from any mod, so it behaves sensibly across a heavily modded setup rather than only in one ecosystem.
Decoration is a large part of the appeal. Looms apply patterns to umbrellas exactly the way they do to banners, and there are several special variants, including a flowering azalea and a giant jellyfish. Finished umbrellas can be placed in umbrella stands, which keep the rain off without wearing the item down, so a build stays dry without any upkeep.
Two enchantments turn the umbrella into a mobility tool as well: one lets you glide down from high places, the other boosts you upwards in the smoke from a campfire. A config option that is disabled by default extends that campfire boost to the Elytra and can switch off rockets, for players who see it as a good way to balance flight.
