Combat Roll answers a question a lot of Minecraft players have asked while fighting: why can you only walk away from a hit? Press R and your character rolls in whatever direction you are heading, forwards, backwards or sideways, so dodging becomes a real option instead of strafing and hoping. The ability has a four second cooldown by default, and the recharge is drawn straight onto the HUD so you always know whether you have another roll in you.
Rolling is not free. Each one drains a bit of hunger exhaustion, and the ability refuses to fire while you are using an item, jumping or swimming, which keeps it from turning into an all-purpose movement key. Servers can retune the cooldown, the distance and the exhaustion cost, and there is an optional invulnerability window during the roll that is switched off by default and can be enabled in the server configuration for a more action-game feel.
Three new entity attributes drive the ability, covering how far you roll, how quickly the cooldown recovers and how many rolls you can chain before waiting. Because they are ordinary attributes, they can be attached to armour pieces, so a pair of boots or a helmet can quietly make you a better dodger. By default a player gets a single three block roll to work with.
Three enchantments build on the same system. Multi-Roll goes on helmets and grants an extra roll per level, Acrobat sits on chestplates and leggings and speeds the cooldown recovery up by ten percent per level, and Longfooted goes on boots to add a block of distance per level. Client side options such as the HUD indicator are handled separately from the server side values, which live in a configuration file created after the game has been run once with the mod installed. The whole thing is a 0.19 MB Fabric download for Minecraft 1.21.1.
