Artifacts makes exploring a Minecraft world worth the trip by adding a collection of powerful items that cannot be crafted at any workbench. There is no recipe to look up and no shortcut through a crafting table, so the only route to a full collection is packing a bag and heading out into the world to find them.
The treasures are hidden in chests inside vanilla structures, recovered through archaeology, and on rare occasions found already worn by an entity you run into. Each individual artifact only appears in a handful of chest types, which spreads the search across many different structures instead of letting a single loot table hand you the whole set at once.
The mod also generates a new underground campsite structure. Mimics occasionally spawn in these camps in place of the chest: dangerous enemies that attack any player who gets too close, and that always drop a random artifact when they are killed. A campsite can therefore hold either loot or a fight.
Every item added by the mod has a unique model when equipped, so finds show up on your character rather than sitting invisibly in a slot. Because a treasure is visible instead of hidden away in an inventory, the collection you have built up reads at a glance.
