Combat Nouveau brings some of the features from Mojang’s Combat Tests into a live Minecraft world right now, then goes further with many additional changes and settings the tests never covered. Everything is fully customizable, so you can take the whole package or keep only the parts your world or server actually wants.
Attacking is the first thing to feel different. Swapping items in the hotbar no longer triggers the attack cooldown, a missed swing can optionally be made free, and holding the attack button can be turned on for repeated attacks. Swords, hoes and tridents get an increased attack reach while the default reach stays at 3.0 blocks rather than dropping to 2.5 as in the combat test snapshots, and sweep attacks now require the sweeping edge enchantment, deal half their usual damage and are dealt even when you hit nothing at all.
Defence is reworked to match. Shields become usable the instant they are activated instead of after the usual quarter of a second, properly knock attackers back and protect a narrower 100 degree arc, with an on-screen indicator similar to the attack cooldown indicator. Potions, milk and bottled liquids go down far faster, though eating and drinking are both interrupted when something lands a hit on you.
Smaller quality-of-life changes fill the remaining gaps. Snowballs, eggs and potions stack higher while eggs and snowballs gain a very brief delay when thrown, tiny mobs are given inflated hitboxes so they can actually be hit, being hit by a projectile no longer grants brief damage immunity, sprinting carries on through a successful hit, which is especially nice while swimming, and items such as totems of undying can be hidden when they sit passively in the offhand.
