Music Maker turns Minecraft into a small recording studio. Music sheets let you write a song note by note, craftable instruments let you perform it by hand, and music boxes and metronomes let the world play it back for you. It is an alternative to note block creations that keeps a whole song on a single sheet.
The sheet editor is the heart of the mod. It scrolls horizontally so even a long piece fits into one sheet, note lengths are set by dragging the mouse, and several notes can sit on the same beat with different lengths overlapping freely. Eight octaves are available, volume can be set for the whole sheet and for each individual note, and tempo steps run all the way up to 3000 BPM. Copy, paste and undo shortcuts work the way you expect, measure lines can be switched on for visual aid, and a help button explains the controls without leaving the game.
Instruments cover a wide range of sounds, with thirteen that can be crafted and a further one that turns up in certain treasures. Using an instrument on its own plays a random note, while holding a sheet in your off hand plays the whole piece out to the world. A MIDI device can be connected and used both to play and to record in real time, and finished sheets can be copied out as plain text to back them up or paste them into another world or server.
Multiplayer was part of the design from the start. Playback is handled so that server lag does not ruin the rhythm the way it does with note block creations, and metronomes pull a group together: after four tickings, every nearby player holding a sheet with the matching tempo and an instrument starts playing synchronously, which is what a band needs to perform a song together.
