X Ray changes how underground exploration feels in Minecraft by stripping away the blocks that hide everything worth mining. Stone and other ordinary blocks are removed so ores, structures and objects stay in plain view, which turns a long blind tunnel into a direct route to the resources you actually want. The effect covers the Nether too, not just the Overworld.
There is nothing to configure and no key to learn. Take a filled map into either hand and the effect switches on by itself; put the map away and you mine normally again. If you want it off for a while without touching the map, an in-game trigger command toggles the mod and the current status is printed straight into the chat, so it is always clear whether the vision is active.
One thing is worth knowing before the first run: the changes this project makes to a world are permanent and irreversible, and removing it later will not restore anything. Test it in a new save or back up your world first. With that handled, it runs on Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Quilt for Minecraft 1.21.1, with Fabric API needed on the Fabric side, and it is available in datapack form as well.
