Wakes is a visual mod that finally gives Minecraft water a memory. Anything moving through it leaves a simulated wake behind, whether that is a boat crossing a lake, a mob swimming a river or a player wading through the shallows, and the whole effect is deliberately kept in the spirit of vanilla rather than turning water into something photoreal.
The small details are what sell it. Waves form at the oars as you row, water is pushed out to either side, and dropping into a lake throws up a proper splash. On a server the wakes are visible to everyone, so you can watch the trail of a friend’s boat spread across the water ahead of you.
Everything is adjustable through an extensive config screen built on MidnightLib, and the mod supports Iris shaders, although some shader packs are known to conflict. Planned additions include foam outlines around models and shorelines, wakes on lava, and an API so other mods can add wakes to their own liquids. It is a 0.28 MB Fabric download for Minecraft 1.21.1.
