Vanilla ladders in Minecraft are fussy about where they will go. Every rung needs a supporting block directly behind it, so open shafts, floating platforms and anything built out over empty space usually end up needing barrier blocks or a temporary support that has to be cleared away afterwards. Better Ladders removes that restriction and lets the ordinary ladder sit in mid-air, right where you want the climb to begin.
Placement still behaves the way you expect whenever a wall is available. Put a ladder against a supporting block and it is placed rotated against that surface just as it always was, while a ladder with nothing behind it simply faces the direction the player is looking. One familiar block therefore covers both the usual mineshaft ladder and a free-standing climb through open air, with no new items to learn.
Existing ladders are much harder to lose, too. Destroying the block a ladder is attached to no longer destroys the ladder, which makes remodelling a staircase or gutting a wall far less irritating. The change sticks in the world itself, so removing the mod later still keeps the floating ladders where they are, and only a block update where the vanilla ladder expects its supporting block will pop one off. The model is left alone, so any of the many 3D ladder resource packs can be layered on top for a chunkier look.
