Maps work well right up to the moment you leave the area they cover. Step past the edge and the player indicator turns into a generic off-map marker with no sense of direction, which makes following a treasure map to its buried chest far more of a guessing game than it should be. This mod converts those off-map and off-limits decorations back into regular player decorations and keeps the rotation intact, so the marker keeps pointing wherever you are actually looking.
On top of that it can print how far you are from the centre of the map, or from the nearest structure marked on it, turning an ordinary Minecraft map into a rough navigation aid. Large values can be shortened to a compact form such as 1.2k once they pass a threshold you choose, which keeps the readout tidy on long journeys.
Everything is adjustable. A JSON configuration file holds the options: whether distances appear at all, whether they show outside the boundaries, inside them or for structures, plus the format string and the short-unit threshold. With Cloth Config and Mod Menu installed the same settings get a proper in-game screen, and the mod’s own commands can read, change, reset and reload them mid-session without a restart.
Built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1, it runs on the server side, so a group only needs it installed once and connected players get the improved markers without touching their own setup. A plain vanilla server will not apply the fix, and compatibility with other mods holds up well as long as they do not heavily modify maps themselves.
