Freelook lets you rotate the camera freely around your character, so you can look around yourself without changing the way you are heading. It is a small client-side camera mod for a 1.8.9 Forge setup.
Multiple camera perspectives are available and the activation style can be customized to match how you play. Camera cycle integration and smooth transitions keep the movement fluid, so the view eases between angles instead of snapping.
Because some servers may consider freelook a competitive advantage, an opt-out protocol was added in version 2.0.0. The client sends a handshake packet when a player joins, and a server that wants the feature turned off responds with a disable packet, after which the player cannot use freelook for that session.
