Campfire Backport lifts campfires and soul campfires out of the modern versions of Minecraft and drops them into 1.7.10, behaving the way players who have moved between versions expect them to. Right-click a campfire with a food item and it goes on the fire; thirty seconds later the cooked result pops back off, and one campfire can hold four items at a time.
The small details that make campfires worth building came along with them. Place a hay bale underneath and the fire becomes a signal fire whose smoke column climbs far higher. Mobs that walk onto a lit campfire take damage, and soul campfires hit noticeably harder. Break a regular one without Silk Touch and it drops charcoal, while a soul campfire drops soul sand, or soul soil when Netherlicious is installed alongside it.
Lighting and putting out a fire can be done in a lot of ways. A shovel, a water bucket or a thrown splash potion will extinguish it, while flint and steel, a fire charge, a left click from a weapon carrying the Fire Aspect enchantment, a burning arrow, a small fireball or simply stepping onto it while on fire will bring it back to life. Several of those also work from a dispenser, so lighting and dousing can be automated.
For modpack makers the config file is where the mod really opens up, and nearly every setting can be applied to regular campfires, soul campfires, both or neither. It covers regeneration effects for nearby players, redstone-driven colored smoke based on the block below, respawn points set by crouching and right-clicking, burn-out timers that can be tuned per biome or dimension, hopper automation from the sides, custom drops, signal fire blocks and vis costs for Thaumcraft wands. Auto recipe discovery can copy every registered furnace recipe that makes food so it works over a campfire, and fully custom recipes, extinguishers and ignitors can be defined on top of that.
