Vanilla Backport is aimed at players who are staying on an older Minecraft version but do not want to miss out on what the newer releases brought. It carries most of those modern features back, and the guiding rule is accuracy: a backported block, mob or piece of world generation is meant to be as close to vanilla Minecraft as possible, not a loose reinterpretation of it.
The scope is content first. Blocks, entities and even world generation are the priority, while purely technical changes under the hood are deliberately left low on the list. That keeps the additions where players actually notice them, in normal survival play, rather than in parts of the engine nobody sees.
Almost everything is optional. Most features have a config value that turns them off, so a server or modpack can keep the parts that fit its theme and drop the rest without hunting for a different mod. One thing worth knowing before you start: resource packs and datapacks built for modern versions are not guaranteed to work, because the mod adds features rather than making newer file formats backwards compatible, so those packs may still need adjusting by hand.
This release is a Fabric build for Minecraft 1.21.1. At 52.45 MB it is a sizeable download for a content mod, which is unsurprising given how much of a modern update it recreates on an older version.
