Smithing trims gave armour a way to show off, but tools were left out of the system. Trimmable Tools extends the same idea to the rest of your kit: using the smithing templates that are already in the game, you apply a trim to a tool and it comes back wearing the pattern. There is nothing new to learn, because the workflow is the one you already use for armour.
The variety comes from how the templates are handled. Rather than every template producing the same look, each one supplies its own unique set of patterns, which works out at 18 possible patterns for a single tool. Count in the different tools and trim materials as well and there are 5400 distinct combinations to work through.
This is a decorative addition, so it sits comfortably in an existing survival world or on a build-focused server. Resource packs that change tool textures keep working with the trims applied, and the project ships as a datapack as well as a mod for worlds that prefer to stay closer to vanilla.
