Dynamic Trees replaces the static tree structures of vanilla Minecraft with living, multi-block trees built from rooty soil, branches and leaves. A tree starts as a seed, either planted by hand like a sapling or self-planted where one happens to land in a good spot, and then grows slowly into a full-sized specimen whose shape, growth rate and final size follow the biome, temperature and rainfall around it.
Each species grows with its own algorithm rather than a reskinned template, so trees bend around obstacles and end up looking believable instead of copy-pasted. Leaves starved of light or cut off from an outer branch die back, trees left in the dark rot away and some species sprout mushrooms as they go, thin branches can be climbed like ladders, and landing on leaves breaks your fall while destroying them. Cutting a trunk at its base fells the entire tree at once and returns logs and sticks in proportion to the volume of wood that was standing there, with fortune on an axe genuinely increasing the yield.
Underneath every tree sits rooty soil that carries nutrients and depletes as the tree grows. Bone meal raises fertility and lets a tree grow past its mature size, while brewed tree potions can strip the soil bare, fully fertilise the tree, transform it into another species, or turn spruce and jungle trees into their Mega variants. A comparator reads soil fertility, and particles play across the whole tree whenever something is applied.
Forests behave like forests: dropped seeds push the tree line outward, neighbouring trees compete for sunlight and grow tall and narrow to form a canopy, that canopy darkens the ground enough for mobs to spawn during the day, and podzol creeps in under the densest cover. Compatibility stays a core value, with vanilla trees still working, worldgen switchable off, ordinary logs and sticks as drops, and vanilla textures for resource pack support. Tree Packs open the whole system up through JSON for custom species and properties, and the creative-only Woodland Staff copies a tree’s shape so it can be replanted or shared as text.
