Broken Generation replaces the usual terrain shaping with a stepped landscape. The world is built in units of eight blocks, so the ground rises in sharp stairs instead of smooth slopes, which turns a familiar Minecraft world into something that looks completely different to explore.
The rest of world generation is left alone. Caves still carve through the ground, ores are still placed, trees grow, water is present and mobs spawn as usual, while cacti and sugar cane appear where you would expect them. Lakes generate in both the regular form and as pools that are eight blocks deep.
Under the hood the mod changes the terrain generation function itself. The download stays tiny and the mod runs on its own, with no extra modloader needed alongside it. Ports to later versions such as 1.5.2, 1.7.10 and 1.12.2 are being considered for the future.
