Bonfires carries the checkpoint idea from the Souls games over to Minecraft. A lit bonfire heals you, stores your spawn point the way a bed does, and becomes a permanent travel node, so a handful of them scattered around a world turns long overland journeys into a menu click. Travel works between any two bonfires, including ones sitting in other dimensions and in dimensions added by other mods.
Building one takes two things: a Pile of Bone and Ash and a Coiled Sword. Piles of Ash come from mobs that burn to death and can be packed into Ash Blocks that behave exactly like sand, while the Coiled Sword is useful in its own right as a weapon that sets mobs alight. Place the pile on the ground, right-click it with the sword to form the bonfire, then light it and give it a name. Marking a bonfire as private hides it from everyone else, who can still travel away from it but never to it.
Getting home is handled by two items. The Homeward Bone sends you to your spawn point and is consumed in the process, while the Coiled Sword Fragment left behind by a destroyed bonfire does the same job over and over without being used up, and can also be turned back into a Coiled Sword for less material. Healing between checkpoints is the job of the Estus Flask, a refillable potion that restores hearts and tops itself back up whenever you rest at a bonfire, with Estus Shards raising the number of drinks it carries.
Server administrators get two commands to keep a growing network in order. One lists bonfires in chat with their name, owner, UUID and position, filtered by dimension, by name, by owner or by a block radius around you, and the other teleports straight to a bonfire by its UUID. Config options cover whether bonfire names are rendered above the block when you look at it, and which item icon represents each dimension as a tab in the travel menu.
