The F-35B Lightning II is the vertical take-off and landing version of the latest American fighter jet, and this conversion brings it into the game with its VTOL setup fully animated. Every lift hatch and engine nozzle moves as it should, so the jet looks convincing both while hovering and in level flight, and the afterburner effect follows the VTOL thruster instead of staying fixed in place.
The weapon fit is modelled rather than hinted at. The internal bays can be opened and hold two JDAM bombs, while four AMRAAMs sit on external hardpoints and two Sidewinders round out the load. The gun position is not identical to the real aircraft, because the real F-35B carries an external gunpod instead of an internal cannon.
Detail work carries over to the surface and damage model as well. The aircraft ships with three different skins, the body is dirt mapped, bullet holes show up on the hull and the canopy glass can be shattered by gunfire. Damaged areas now burn rather than turning uniformly black, and the roll indicator in the cockpit reads correctly in flight.
