Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on November 19, 2026, and the anticipation stacked up behind it is unlike anything else on the release calendar. The single biggest reason is the destination: Vice City, the series’ beloved Miami stand-in, last visited by a mainline GTA back in 2002. Add record-breaking trailers, a two-protagonist crime story and a state-sized map, and the result is a launch that has swallowed the industry’s attention.

Trailers that turned into world events
Rockstar confirmed the project in February 2022 and revealed it properly in December 2023, with a first trailer that broke YouTube viewing records within hours. A second one followed in May 2025 and widened the picture: more of the state of Leonida, a present-day Vice City and a supporting cast built around the two leads.
The next chapter is three days away, and Rockstar is deliberately not calling it a trailer. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look arrives on August 27, 2026, on Rockstar’s channels and the official Grand Theft Auto VI site. Rockstar has not itemised what is in it, though most of the community expects gameplay; our roundup of what fans hope to see next collects the predictions.

Vice City, rebuilt around modern Miami
For millions of players, Vice City means the pastel-and-neon 1980s of the 2002 classic. GTA 6 is not a remake of that map, though. Its Vice City is a contemporary metropolis: beach gyms out on the sand, social-media culture everywhere, jet skis in the bay and storms rolling in off the Atlantic. The nostalgia is the hook; the city itself is entirely new.

Leonida: a map built for scale
The city is only the anchor. Leonida, Rockstar’s take on Florida, stretches out into swampland, rural highways and island chains that clearly echo the Florida Keys. Fan mapping projects have spent years reconstructing the world from trailer frames, and some community estimates put the playable area at up to 2.5 times the size of GTA V’s map. That figure is fan math, not an official number; our breakdown of GTA 6 map theories and leaks explains how those projects reached it.

Lucia and Jason: the series’ first crime couple
For the first time in the franchise, the story is shared between two protagonists: Lucia Caminos, fresh out of prison and the first woman to headline a mainline GTA story, and Jason Duval, her partner in a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style spiral. Rockstar’s own setup sends them running after a heist goes wrong, into a conspiracy that spans the whole state. Everything confirmed about them so far sits in our Lucia and Jason profile.

Two leads bound to each other point to a tighter, more personal story than GTA V’s three-protagonist structure. Lucia has fronted the marketing since the reveal.

The road to November 19
The wait has not been painless. The short version of how we got here:
- December 2023 — reveal trailer, with a 2025 release window
- May 2025 — first delay, to May 26, 2026; trailer 2 followed the same month
- November 2025 — second delay, to the final date of November 19, 2026
- June 2026 — editions and pricing revealed, $79.99 standard and $99.99 ultimate; pre-orders opened June 25
- August 27, 2026 — An Extended Look premieres
Take-Two has repeatedly said the date will not move again, and both delays were framed as extra polish rather than trouble. Buying before November 20 also secures the Vintage Vice City Pack of in-game extras, and digital preload opens on November 12. The game launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with no PC version announced so far; the full picture is in our release date overview. And whenever the modding community gets its hands on Leonida, CrashMods will be here for it.
