Grand Theft Auto VI has spent three years as the most rumor-swarmed game on the planet, and with the November 19, 2026 release date locked in and the pricing officially settled, the insider scorecard can finally be graded. A handful of reporters called the setting, the protagonists and even the delays years ahead of time, while plenty of confident date predictions aged badly.
The calls that held up
Back in 2021, when much of the fanbase still expected an imminent reveal, Tom Henderson claimed the game would be set in a modern-day Vice City, would use a map built to keep growing after launch, and would land far later than the hype suggested. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier corroborated him, saying Henderson’s reporting matched what his own sources were describing, and Schreier’s July 2022 piece added the Bonnie-and-Clyde framing and a Latina lead, though her name stayed unreported. The September 2022 development-footage leak and then the December 2023 reveal trailer confirmed nearly all of it: Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval tearing across Leonida’s version of Vice City.
Where the rumor mill faceplanted
Dates are where insider credibility goes to die. Every window the mill settled on, 2024 before the reveal and late 2025 after it, was overtaken by Rockstar’s two official delays in May 2025 and November 2025. Trailer guessing fared no better: predictions for the second trailer kept slipping through 2024 before it finally arrived in May 2025, and the calls for a third trailer in early August have yet to produce anything Rockstar labels a trailer. Several of the bigger structural claims are still exactly what they were on day one, which is to say unverified:
- A Fortnite-style creator platform inside the online mode, the theory behind the user-generated content speculation, has never been acknowledged by Rockstar.
- The idea that the online component would be sold separately from the story campaign appears nowhere in the June 2026 pricing announcement.
- Official mod tools remain a fan hope rather than a stated plan. Rockstar has never shipped them for a GTA game, and nothing has changed on that front.
What the summer of 2026 settled
The price argument is over. Rockstar announced pricing on June 24, 2026 and opened pre-orders the next day: $79.99 for the Standard Edition, $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. That puts everyone who defended the $80 to $100 range closer to the mark than the people who mocked them, and anyone buying before November 20, 2026 also gets the Vintage Vice City Pack thrown in.
Instead of the plain third trailer the mill kept forecasting, Rockstar announced Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look. It premieres on Netflix on Thursday, August 27, 2026, and what it shows should settle a fair share of the claims above. Rockstar has not itemised what it contains, so the gameplay expectations flying around are themselves unconfirmed. Rockstar and Netflix are billing the tie-up as a first of its kind, and it reached the public as an official announcement rather than as a leak.
How to read the next leak
- Track record beats volume. Henderson and Schreier built trust on verified calls; most viral “insider” accounts have none.
- Content ages better than dates. The setting and character claims held up for years, while the schedule moved twice, so even genuine sources miss on timing.
- No name, no date, no story. A claim nobody will attach a byline to is entertainment, not information.
Expect the mill to spin faster as November 19 approaches, and faster still the moment the Extended Look hands everyone fresh frames to freeze and argue over.
