GTA 6 Price Leak Saga: From $112 Panic to $79.99 Reality

In March 2025, a Swiss electronics shop briefly opened GTA 6 preorders at 99 francs — roughly $112 at the time — and set off more than a year of arguing over whether Rockstar would push a base game past $100. That argument is settled: the standard edition costs $79.99, the Ultimate Edition $99.99, and the triple-digit sticker on a plain copy never arrived.

The Swiss Listing That Started the Panic

In early March 2025, BRACK.CH listed the PlayStation 5 version of Grand Theft Auto VI at 99 CHF. No collector bundle, no explanation — just a number where nobody expected one. What lifted it from oddity to headline was the shop’s reaction: staff answering questions on the page reportedly told shoppers the figure was accurate. Days later the entry quietly disappeared.

Plenty of people pointed out the arithmetic did not hold: Swiss shelf prices carry VAT and sit well above American list prices, and retailers routinely park placeholder figures on unannounced games. But Rockstar offered no correction, and a converted $112 headline is a hard thing to un-ring.

How Analysts Talked Themselves Into $100

The listing landed while the industry was already rehearsing higher prices.

  • Matthew Ball of Epyllion reported in his January 2025 state-of-the-industry study that parts of the market were hoping Take-Two would charge $80 or even $100, since game prices had lagged inflation for years. He later clarified that the hope belonged to others, not to him — his own guess was $70.
  • Michael Pachter of Wedbush expected a $100 price point outright, pairing it with an estimated development spend above $1.5 billion and a forecast of roughly $10 billion in lifetime revenue.
  • Tom Henderson, among the most reliable GTA 6 insiders, pushed back, treating the $100 talk as analyst modelling rather than anything sourced from inside Rockstar.

Rockstar let it all run for over a year without comment. Saying nothing is a deliberate part of the studio’s playbook, but on pricing it simply handed the microphone to whoever guessed loudest.

The Numbers Rockstar Finally Published

The official reveal came on June 24, 2026, with preorders opening at midnight local time the next day:

  • Standard Edition — $79.99 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S
  • Ultimate Edition — $99.99, adding premium vehicles, mod shops, weapons, cosmetic venues and extra story content for Jason and Lucia
  • Vintage Vice City Pack for every copy bought before November 20, 2026 — a ’55 Vapid Stanier with its garage, vintage outfits and a tropical weapon finish
  • One month of GTA+ included with digital preorders, with preload opening November 12
  • No early access on any edition — Take-Two says both versions carry enough content without it

Henderson’s skepticism aged best. Pachter’s $100 matched only the optional Ultimate tier, and the triple-digit base price parts of the industry were hoping for never arrived — the copy most players will buy came in $20 under it.

The Leak Right Before the Reveal

Retailers got one last swing. On June 21, 2026, FNAC’s Portuguese arm briefly showed a ladder of Grand Theft Auto VI entries running from €89.99 to €199.99, and it looked for a moment like Europe faced a surcharge. Leaker billbil-kun called those numbers placeholder inventory values within hours, pointing out that the EAN barcodes did not match Take-Two’s usual prefixes. Rockstar’s reveal three days later bore him out: there is no tiered ladder and no €199.99 edition, only the two versions above. Both ends of the saga make the same point — a value in a shop’s database is not a price until the publisher signs off.

What Comes Next Before November 19

With cost settled, the open questions are about the game itself. Rockstar premieres Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on August 27, and whatever it shows will arrive the way the price did — through Rockstar’s own channels, not a retailer’s database. It is the biggest scheduled reveal left before the November 19, 2026 launch, and after two delays Take-Two keeps insisting this date holds. When a GTA 6 modding scene eventually takes shape, CrashMods will be ready to host it.
