GTA 6 Delay History: How 2025 Became November 19, 2026

When Rockstar Games first put a date on Grand Theft Auto VI, the screen showed a single year: 2025. Two delays later the game sits on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — and a confirmed price, open preorders and a Netflix premiere booked for August 27 now point to a date that holds. Here is how the slip happened.

The original promise: a 2025 game

It started in December 2023. The debut trailer smashed viewing records within hours and signed off with a plain 2025 card. Doubt set in early: Rockstar stayed quiet through most of 2024, no follow-up trailer arrived, and every silent month made 2025 look thinner. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier later reported that a fall 2025 target had long been treated internally as a stretch, and that management preferred moving the date over forcing crunch. Every beat from the reveal onward sits in our GTA 6 announcement timeline.

Delay one: May 2, 2025 — the year slips to May 26, 2026

The first slip arrived on May 2, 2025 in a short post on the Rockstar Newswire: GTA 6 would miss 2025 entirely and arrive on May 26, 2026 instead. The studio thanked players for waiting, called the anticipation humbling, and argued the extra months were needed to hit the series’ quality bar.

Investors moved fast — Take-Two shares slid on the news and closed the session down around 7 percent. Rockstar had a painkiller ready, though: the second trailer landed on May 6, gave the clearest look yet at Lucia, Jason and Vice City, and swung the mood back to hype.

Delay two: November 6, 2025 — landing on November 19, 2026

The second delay landed on November 6, 2025, during Take-Two’s quarterly earnings day: May 26 became November 19, 2026, close to six additional months. Rockstar again framed it as a polish decision, apologizing for adding to an already long wait and saying the extra months were needed to finish the game to the standard players expect.

The market reacted again — Take-Two stock slipped in after-hours trading despite a quarter that beat expectations — and fan patience was thinner too. Since then, CEO Strauss Zelnick has repeated at nearly every public appearance that the company is confident in the November date.

The delay history at a glance

  • December 2023 — announcement trailer, with a 2025 window
  • May 2, 2025 — delay one: new date May 26, 2026; trailer 2 follows on May 6
  • November 6, 2025 — delay two: the current date, November 19, 2026
  • June 2026 — pricing and editions confirmed; preorders open June 25
  • August 27, 2026 — an extended look at the game premieres on Netflix
  • November 19, 2026 — launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S

Where the date stands in August 2026

Everything since points one way. Rockstar ended months of price speculation in June 2026 by confirming a $79.99 Standard Edition and a $99.99 Ultimate Edition; preorders opened on June 25, with the Vintage Vice City Pack attached to any purchase made before November 20 and digital preload set for November 12.

Marketing has started rather than stalled: Rockstar’s extended look at the game arrives on August 27, and how much of it turns out to be real gameplay is still an open question.

A PC version remains unannounced. Zelnick sounded confident before both earlier delays too, but a publisher that has locked pricing, opened preorders and booked a streaming premiere is not behaving like one about to move again.
