GTA 6 Official Mod Support: What’s Real and What’s Rumor

Let’s settle the headline first: Rockstar has never announced official mod support for GTA 6, and as of late August 2026 no statement from the studio confirms it. What exists instead is a stack of circumstantial evidence — an acquired modding platform, a paid creator storefront that opened in January 2026, and a persistent insider rumor about a project codenamed ROME — that together suggest sanctioned modding is being built behind closed doors.

The prospect sounds thrilling until you weigh it against how Rockstar and publisher Take-Two Interactive have handled modders before. If tools do arrive, everything in that record says they will be curated, monetized and kept on a short leash.

The paper trail: an acquisition, a meeting, a storefront

The strongest evidence dates to August 2023, when the team behind Cfx.re — the group running FiveM and RedM, the roleplay platforms built on GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 — officially joined Rockstar Games. Nobody absorbs the industry’s largest modding community just to switch it off.

The signals kept arriving. In mid-February 2025 the trade publication Digiday reported, citing three industry insiders with knowledge of the meetings, that Rockstar had approached prominent Fortnite and Roblox creators about building custom experiences inside its next game. No outlet has independently corroborated that report, and Rockstar never commented on it — a thread we pull on in our piece on GTA 6 as a user-generated content platform. Then on January 12, 2026, Cfx.re opened the Cfx Marketplace: a curated storefront where vetted creators sell scripts, maps and props for real money — single premium mods reach $129.99 and creator bundles $389.99. It serves GTA V and RDR2 today, and few believe it was built for two aging games alone.

Project ROME: the rumor everything orbits

Since February 2025 the dataminer Tez2 has pointed to a first-party creation system codenamed ROME — widely reported to stand for Rockstar Online Modding Engine, though even that expansion is unverified. One detail gets lost in the retelling: what Tez2 actually surfaced was tied to GTA V and GTA Online, not to GTA 6. The jump to the new game is the press and the fanbase filling in a blank. Descriptions put it somewhere between Roblox and Fortnite’s creative mode, with creator monetization baked in, but Rockstar has confirmed none of it; our rundown of the credible GTA 6 insiders is a useful filter for which sources have earned trust.

Why sanctioned modding will not mean a free-for-all

Take-Two’s record with modders is why every optimistic rumor needs an asterisk:

  • 2017: Take-Two sent a cease-and-desist to OpenIV, the tool half the GTA V modding scene depended on, and retreated only after an enormous fan backlash.
  • 2022: DMCA takedowns hit Luke Ross’s VR conversions, despite the mods requiring a legally purchased copy of the game.
  • 2023: a showcase video for an AI-driven NPC mod in GTA V’s single-player vanished, its creator never given a meaningful reason.
  • Post-acquisition: Cfx.re’s rules tightened — real-world branding and assets lifted from other games now need the rights holder’s blessing.

The pattern is consistent. Modding is welcome inside the fence Rockstar builds: approved tools, an approved storefront, revenue sharing on the company’s terms, and quick removal of anything that wanders past the posts.

What to watch before launch day

GTA 6 lands November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at $79.99 for the Standard Edition, covered in our GTA 6 release date overview. With no PC version announced, file-level modding is not even on the table yet; going by the GTA V and RDR2 timelines, that door only opens once a PC port eventually arrives. The next realistic chance for clarity is Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look showcase on August 27, 2026, and with no agenda published for it, a modding reveal there is possible rather than promised. Until the studio says the word out loud, official support stays a well-evidenced rumor. When a real GTA 6 modding scene takes shape, its mods will find a home right here on CrashMods.
