The Lotus Type 49 is one of the landmark Formula One cars of the late 1960s. Its 3.0-liter Ford Cosworth DFV V8 doubled as a stressed part of the chassis, an approach that Formula One teams would follow for many years afterwards. The car won first time out, with Jim Clark taking the 1967 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort and giving both the Type 49 and the DFV their maiden victory.
In BeamNG.drive the Type 49 tips the scales at roughly 540 kg and puts out around 410 hp through a five-speed manual gearbox, with the weight sitting heavily over the rear axle. By modern standards it is a basic car, yet an extremely demanding one, because almost nothing stands between the driver and the mechanical parts doing the work.
This release incorporates feedback from earlier projects, mainly around overall setup, tire options and usability. The default configuration stays true to the period, while modern slick tires are available as an option for anyone who wants a more manageable version of the car.
Playing on a keyboard is not recommended, as the car calls for smooth and precise brake, throttle and steering inputs that a keyboard cannot modulate well. It is best suited to players with a wheel or controller who enjoy classic Formula One machinery.
